Sinhala & Tamil New Year Celebration – 2012

The Sri Lankan Community Social Club in Muscat in collaboration with the Embassy of Sri Lanka organized the Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival at the Oman Automobile Ground, Seeb, Muscat on 20th April 2012.

The Sinhala & Tamil New Year Festival Celebration in Oman is one of the most significant cultural events to the Sri Lankan expatriates’ community.

More than 3,000 people of diverse cross section of the Sri Lankan community the with their families participated at this event. This celebration was opened to entire Sri Lankan community in the Sultanate of Oman irrespective of their race, religion or cast.

The celebration was started at 9.00 a.m. with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, followed by sharing traditional Sri Lankan food among the participants.

After the formalities, participants enjoyed a traditional New Year games. Many children and their parents enjoyed in the games throughout the afternoon. When the games drew to an end there was an award presentation for the winners.

Whilst all the joys were had into the games, there were number of food stalls running in the Automobile Ground premises. They were absolutely crowded all day, beginning at 10.00 a.m and going through til 11.00 p.m.

Major events such as Traditional cultural show, Avurudu Kumari Pageant Show (New Year Beauty Queen Contest) and Live Musical Entertainment were taken place in the evening.

The Sri Lankan Embassy, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, Banks and other Organizations sponsored the event.
